My Dear Friend,
I’m writing to you from orbit around – well, I suppose I shouldn’t say, even if you are technically also a General. Oh, how glad I am that it is only a nominal position for you! I know that you wished you could do more, that your illness did not keep you from being on the front. But it is a dreadful place to be. I have soothed the nightmares of many of my men while suffering under them myself, and there is always so much pain and death all around, with little respite. We haven’t been able to make it to the surface yet, but I’d swear I can feel their suffering all the way from orbit.
I can see it, too. I’d been here once before the war, and even from space I can see how the landscape has been changed. I can only hope that the time of recovery will be measured in decades, not generations.
It is difficult to find balance, these days. It helps, knowing that you are at home and far away from all of this. Though I know that you’re not untouched by this war, even at home. My heart aches whenever you write of how quiet it is.
I hope to return on leave soon; it will not be so quiet then, unless you’ve forgotten how we used to terrorize our Masters with our little band. We should play again; it’s been far too long since I’ve had an instrument in my hands, and we could all use the levity. Until then, I suppose you will just have to recruit the younglings into the musical menaces the Temple needs. I’m sure Master Yoda will approve!
Forgive my short message; the assault resumes soon.
May the Force be with you,
