The birds are circling. The flock grows thicker, blocking out the light of the suns. Dozens of birds becomes hundreds.
Thousands.
Just one.
It’s…big. Much bigger than Anakin, at any rate, and even though it’s not blocking the whole sky anymore, the suns haven’t returned. The bird’s dark wings are deeper than black, devouring the light before it reaches Anakin’s eyes. He can’t see it, or anything at all, but he can feel it, cold, dark, familiar.
“Balance.” The word is sneered, dripping with hate. “Such a pretty excuse, isn’t it? To deny the strong from their true potential, from their rightful place.”
Anakin ignites his lightsaber in an instant, because he knows that voice. “I killed you.”
“Did you now, Chosen One?” the Son mocks. But Anakin can see him now – whatever that being’s power, it can’t consume the light of his blade.
Anakin circles, looking for an angle of attack. But even though the bird – the Son – never moves, it’s always facing him.
“You have tasted too much of the Dark Side to ever kill me fully, Chosen One. Not as much as you will, someday, but already, so much. But why should you want to kill me now? Convenient, isn’t it, how balance always means restricting me, restricting you. Did ever my sister need to be held in check? No! Only me. Always me.”
“You’re evil,” Anakin retorted, trying to ignore how much the Son’s words resonated with his own frustrations.
“Is it evil to see that things are not as they could be, as they should be, and use your power to make it be? Is it evil to right the wrongs done to you, and to punish them if they cannot be made right? Because if so, Chosen One, what does that make you?”
