He recognizes the smell as soon as he enters Maarva’s house: the lemon cookies she only makes on special occasions. It’s the smell of home. Instantly, some of the tension leaves his body.
“I made them for you,” Maarva says, smiling and pulling him in for a tight hug. “That sugar was hard to get. Had to do some tough bartering.”
“Thank you,” Cassian says as he savors Maarva’s own scent, the soft curls brushing his face. He knows how she hates to cook. “How did you know I was coming?”
“I didn’t, just had a sense. Now dig in.”
