On those worst nights when Reva wakes to the scent memory of smoking flesh and the screams of the dying, the ghost climbs into bed with her and holds her. She doesn’t know her true name, but their presences match, all anguish and rage held back by a single sputtering light. In the comparison, she recognizes someone who lived the same hell, but didn’t survive. Someone she once knew.
The embrace against her skin—almost real, but never quite—should be its own torment, but it’s not. The ghost is a person, but she is also the Force itself; relaxing into the feeling is a balm to her racing heart as she comes down from a nightmare.
And each time she moves somewhere else, always running, always hiding, the ghost eventually follows, and the fear that she won’t return is chased away all over again.
She doesn’t know why this is happening. She only knows the ghost is troubled and lonely like her, and that her existence is holding Reva’s own will together.
“Thank you,” she says into the dark, and in response, feels a chaste, phantom kiss against the nape of her neck and arms tightening around her stomach.
